Pit Firing Workshop DONDINGALONG

Booking Date

Service Description

The first three hour long workshop aims to get you started creating small to medium size hand built pottery pieces suitable for a pit firing. You are welcome to make wheel thrown items at home and in your own time if that is your preference. Your tutor will provide you with lots of ideas and demonstrate hand building, burnishing techniques on a leather-hard piece and also how to make and apply 'terra sigillata' slip in preparation for the initial bisque firing. You will have 3-4 weeks to create more pottery at home and deliver it back to Pipers Creek Pottery for bisque firing. Once all the work has been bisque fired we will get together for the pit firing. We have set aside Saturday, 5 April for a pit firing however this may change. The pit firing can only happen once the fire ban has been lifted and we have enough pottery to fill the bottom of the pit. Loading the pit with pottery, sawdust, chemicals, kindling and wood will take approximately 3 hours. You will be invited back a week later to empty the pit and take your pit fired pottery home. The cost of this workshop includes tuition, 5 kgs white earthenware clay, a 500 ml pot of terra sigillata to take home, a bisque firing and the final pit firing. Please read T's & C's before booking this workshop.
