Making Pottery Glazes - DONDINGALONG

Booking Date

Service Description

Glaze Technology for Beginners There are so many beautiful glazes you can purchase online these days and that's all well and good, but eventually it becomes very expensive especially if you start producing more than just a few pieces of pottery as give-aways or keepsakes. The reason for this workshop is to show you just how easy it is to test and create your own glazes. The clay and glaze recipes we will be using are suitable for mid-range temperatures in an electric kiln. We will be making 3 different base glazes; one glossy, one matt and one satin-matt then we will do what's called 'line blending' - adding small amounts of oxides to create different results. This workshop is going to require team work. Together you will accurately weigh out dry materials, place into cups, add water, sieve then apply to already bisque fired test tiles. Your tutor will supply already bisque fired tiles using a few different types of clay. We will talk about the basic ingredients required to make a glaze, and believe me, it sounds harder than it really is! Once the test tiles have been glaze fired, we'll get together for a half hour on a Saturday or Sunday to look at and discuss the results before you take them home. The course fee covers already bisque fired test tiles (3 different types of clay), glaze ingredients and a glaze firing. Your tutor will also supply aprons, gloves and masks to use during this workshop. Please read T's & C's before booking.
